Unconcealed

To Heidegger, "Things are, and human beings, gifts, and sacrifices are, animals and plants are, equipment and works are." With an unlocked heart, a longing mind, and as I am, I bring forth Unconcealed to you. I humbly ask you, the viewer, to travel with me towards a unique destination where we are free from the unwieldy ropes of our past and the restricting knots of an irrelevant future. As we exist in the security of the present, we will shed our old skins, gleefully hang our hats, and erase our snake-inflicted scars. We will begin each day as a new experience, live in the beauty of the moment, and simply be.

Father-Daughter Dialogue (2008)

Father-Daughter Dialogue (2008)
"Through personal and critical analysis, I inevitably created an abstract self-portrait that enters a dialogue between my complexities, and the simple gesture of a father who reaches for his daughter."

Inward Bindings (2008), four panel linocut series

Inward Bindings (2008), four panel linocut series
"Inward Bindings is an abstract glimpse into my present emotional state and a metaphorical depiction dug out of the residue of past instances. Each square composition possesses a landmark thread within my metaphorical rope of experience and life’s uncontrollable variables."

"My Inner Conformity" Linocut (2008)

"My Inner Conformity" Linocut (2008)
"My rope is descriptive and individual, yet it is as identical as each member within a family unit remains. There is no rope that is bound stronger in comparison to another."

"Tying The Snare Knot" Linocut (2008)

"Tying The Snare Knot" Linocut (2008)
"Tying the Snare Knot represents a moving twist, a self-inflicted wound closed off in a knot that could only be generated from within."

"Inner Crossroads" Linocut (2008)

"Inner Crossroads" Linocut (2008)
"I have not arrived at either a north or south destination, nor articulated or constructed a beginning or end point of the rope. However, I will continue to look for unidentified narrow roads, the strands, which remain systematically concealed within my inner being."

"Looking Within Myself" Linocut (2008)

"Looking Within Myself" Linocut (2008)
"Through experiences (what has been and what the present outcome presents), I have no choice but to focus, deconstruct, untangle, and truly analyze the fibers that lie within myself. These twisted fibers of life have created a complex sea of information."

Proceed with Caution (2008)

Proceed with Caution (2008)
"Physically and mentally, I recall the past anxiety of being one stoplight closer to the destinations involved in Inward Bindings and how I endured the painful, unsuspecting, and poisonous bite of Expected Events Will Happen in Unexpected Places (When a Snake Is Involved)."

Father-Daughter Dialogue (2008)

Father-Daughter Dialogue (2008)
"My right arm may well be severed by fear, personal actions or miscommunications, or be stunted in the binding tension of my emotional fibers. In their physical condition — thin for rope, slack —the rope arms may appear to be weakened by these events. However, the image also contains its opposite: rope, even if thin or knotted, hides an unexpected strength in its structure that can be unleashed toward restitution of just relations."

After the Storm Had Passed (2008)

After the Storm Had Passed (2008)
"...symbolically hung above Father-Daughter Dialogue to represent interpersonal, spiritual, and traditional relationship expectations that I felt were too high to begin with and framed too much by others."

Expected Events Will Happen in Unexpected Places (When a Snake Is Involved) (2008)

Expected Events Will Happen in Unexpected Places (When a Snake Is Involved) (2008)
"The extensive rope that joins the drawing is coiled to mimic the striking stance of a venomous snake. This metaphorical snake comes complete with a frayed rope rattle at the end of its coil."

The Beard of St. Haralambos: after death (2007)

The Beard of St. Haralambos: after death (2007)
"In the Byzantine era, the usage of preliminary geometrical forms in drawings was symbolic in every facet in the writing of iconography. These mathematical shapes were the initial under-painting of every icon and were crucial devices for understanding the icons."

The Head of John the Baptist/The Feet of St. Ephriam (2007)

The Head of John the Baptist/The Feet of St. Ephriam (2007)
"Icon’s symbolism, meaning, style, history, and personal connection were the necessary foundation for my abstract icon series."

The Hand of St. Stephen (2007)

The Hand of St. Stephen (2007)
"...my deconstruction of iconography series intentionally reduced rendering to simple, flat charcoal shapes with a great deal of white space surrounding them. Color was religiously dictated in this series, based strictly on symbolism and scripture and is therefore very specific to the representation."

Pope Confrontation (2007)

Pope Confrontation (2007)
"This series and the majority of past works were created to intentionally focus on this bitter sweet dichotomy and on how I am, for my part torn, by decisions, past actions, and future choices."

Misinformed (2007)

Misinformed (2007)
"For me, a square can be professed as an open gateway for entry or as a concluding portal for isolation. The square can be a container for the self."

The Rise of Lazarus: Tribulation, Transition, Transfiguration (2007)

The Rise of Lazarus: Tribulation, Transition, Transfiguration (2007)
"By the willing grace of God, Lazarus overcame death and triumphantly emerged from his tomb. However, he was still bound by earthly, physical bindings. It was only by the compassionate aid of others that Lazarus was unbound. Sympathetically and symbolically, I relate to Lazarus as I struggle to loosen my inner bindings by empathetic love, aid, and the hopeful advice of others."

From East to West (2006)

From East to West (2006)
"There is visual simplicity to every charcoal drawing I create. Their minimal execution ironically opposes their complicated meanings. To me, they are the colorless gray areas of familiarity that intertwine within unfamiliarity."

Christ Descends into Hell (2007)

Christ Descends into Hell (2007)
"...the abstract black and white imagery of this iconography series coupled with its realistic rendering embraced the personal tension stemming from a profound puzzlement at understanding what is good and not good."

Lost within Myself (2007)

Lost within Myself (2007)
"My current drawings are often perceived as graphic works, design-like in their nature. Their simple geometric composition references my abstract iconography series, while their realistic nature in handling is reminiscent of my past works as a professional illustrator."
